I Am Sorry
Journal 08 of the Heralds Of The Dawn.
I feel like such a complete moron right now. After passing through all six seals we came to room with a book and a piece of rock on an altar of some sort. There was writing on the walls that seemed to glow a bit, but none of us could read it. Jerick absent-mindedly said, “I wish Dean were here,” because none of us could read the inscriptions and low-and-behold, Dean was. He was alive and well, a bit on the naked side and a bit confused, but he was okay. Wow, how is that possible, he was literally obliterated by that rock creature and now he was standing in front of me.

Jerick asked him to read the inscription for us, which read, “Those who pass through the six seals, starting with fire, shall receive, their hearts desire.” Varian apparently excited by this immediately piped in with, “I want… I want a sack of beetles.” Which appeared in his hand. Though he was disappointed when he asked for another and didn’t get it, which he thought it only fair that he at least get three sacks of beetles, since that would be on par with bringing Dean back.

Now I was only half-paying attention to this dilemma that was unfolding, as I was still confused as to what was going on. How is it that Dean could come back? Is such a thing possible? This must be the handiwork of the gods, as only they are powerful enough to breach the gap between life and death. Or so I thought.

Now I’ve done some dumb things in my days, but what happened next is probably one the very top of that list as the next words that came out of my mouth were, “I wish I understood this magic better,” which at the time seemed an appropriate statement as I was thoroughly confused by what was going on, being that I’ve never really been around magic, other than the very small bits which I can pray for. I guess I didn’t really realize that I would get my wish.

I now realize what exactly I did, as after muttering those words a clarity came over me as I immediately understood every aspect of the magic surrounding the room. I look back and I wonder how I could have not known what that magic was. That it is one of the most powerful spells ever to be spun. That with only small limitations, it can provide for almost any wish, down to the last syllable spoken. Had I not said ‘this magic’ as opposed to just ‘magic,’ I would most likely have a complete knowledge of magic as it has existed through out time.

I wish I didn’t feel so stupid, but if I’ve learned one thing from this, it’s that when it comes to magic, I need to tread more lightly and let those who are more learned deal with these things. If I had listened to the other three, I may have been able to bring Daniel back as Jerick brought Dean back. Forgive me Daniel, I’m so sorry.
